What is a same day crown?
What does "same day crown" mean?
-
We use CEREC technology to create a permanent dental restoration. We prepare, design, fabricate, and can place your crown, bridge, or Veneers in a single, two-hour office visit.
-
CEREC stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics. This system uses computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM). This allows us to skip traditional messy putty impressions (which no one likes) and limits our use of external dental labs.
What does this mean for me?
-
No Temporary Crown: With having your permanent restoration made during your appointment it allows you to skip the hassle, fragility, and discomfort of wearing a temporary plastic crown for two weeks.
-
Fewer Visits: With making your crown and seating it the same day, it allows for fewer office visits, and less time off of work.
-
No more messy impressions: With our digital workflow we are able to bypass the part of the appointment that everyone hates, impressions. Instead we use a digital wand (intraoral scanner) that acts like a specialized video camera to take thousands of pictures per second. The computer then creates your digital model from those images.
-
Better accuracy: With using digital imaging and placing the restoration the same day it allows for the best fitting restorations. Traditional putty can shrink, distort, or tear, and the stone that the lab uses can create shrinkage. Digital scans have exact, unmoving precision that gives us the most accurate fitting restorations.
-
Better Results: When the restoration is complete and tried in we have very little, or no, adjustments.
What is the appointment like?
-
First part of the appointment: When you first arrive for your appointment you will be seated in one of own treatment rooms and we will go over what is planned to do at your visit (crown, onlay, bridge, veneer) and go over the cost.
-
Second: The dentist will come in and numb the are we will be working on to make sure you are comfortable for the duration of your visit. We will also take any x-rays that need to be updated at this time.
-
Third: The dentist will prepare the tooth/teeth for the restoration discussed at the beginning of the appointment. During this time we will take intraoral photos of what we are doing to share with you.
-
Fourth: Once the dentist has completed preparing the tooth/teeth for the restoration we will take digital images using our CEREC scanner. The dentist then designs the restoration on the computer and sends it to one of our many milling units. During this period of time you are free to get up and walk around, catch up on emails, play your favorite game on your phone, or just relax.
-
Fifth: Your restoration will me milled using one of our many CEREC milling units. Depending on the restoration material, it can take as little as 5 minutes to mill your restoration. Once the restoration is milled we will place it in one of our ovens for about 9-20 minutes depending on the restoration material and size. (The oven cycle is where the restoration gets its strength and shade) .
-
Sixth: Once your restoration is complete we will try in the restoration, make sure it seals properly, and flosses the way it should. Then we will get the restoration ready to be cemented, and the tooth/teeth ready to accept the restoration. Once this is complete we will cement the restoration using the appropriate cement for the material used, clean the excess cement, take a final x-ray, and check the bite. The dentist will adjust the bite if needed, and then you are done!
-
From start to finish it takes only two hours or less. And you will leave with your permanent restoration!
